Private Practice Question - Should I Find A Job Or Go Right Into Private Practice?

Posted on April 21, 2008 - Filed Under Business

Q: “Should I go into private practice for myself or should I get a job first?”

Excellent question!

But before answering it, there are some very important things to consider:

1. What type of position are you in financially to start a private practice?

Although start-up fees can be low, building and marketing a private practice can take some time. What will you rely on for income or expenses in the meantime?

While a job may be more immediate, building a private practice can be a strong foundation for a long lasting career.

2. What are you most passionate about?

Do you want to be in private practice because you enjoy that type of work? Or are you more attracted to working for yourself and setting your own schedule? Both can be quite appealing, but it is important to remember that building a private practice is not easy.

3. What type of services will you be offering?

To be successful as quickly and efficiently as one can, you really need to consider specializing in a particular field or area of psychology. Most people are willing to see everybody, but your patients want to see someone who can specifically help with their problems.

4. What do I do if I can’t be accepted to insurance panels for a few years?
