Freelance Writers - Seven Ways To Broaden Your Professional Network
Posted on March 31, 2008 - Filed Under Writing and Speaking
One of the easiest ways to grow your freelance writing business is to broaden your professional network. Here are seven ways to do that:
1. Join several listservs for writers. Over the years, I’ve gotten writing assignments, invitations for school visits, and other information from writers I’ve met via listservs. I’ve also made some great friends. You’ll find all sorts of listservs for writers at www.yahoogroups.com.
2. Set up a MySpace.com page. And then “work your page.” MySpace is a super way to broaden your network, but you can’t simply create a page there and not do anything to promote yourself and widen your circle of friends. You need to visit other MySpace pages and send requests to become a friend of someone who looks like he/she might be a great contact and “friend” for you.
3. Network off line as well as on line. One of the ways I network off line is through Meetup.com. I know - it sounds like it’s an online way to network. And, in a way, it is. However, the actual Meetups occur off line.
If there isn’t a writers Meetup in your neck of the woods, then create one.
4. Join your local small business association. Other small business owners need the services of a writer. Check your phone book to find the name and contact info. for your local small business association. Then, call or email to find out about their next meeting. Attend that meeting. Be sure to take your business cards and promotional materials with you. But don’t be pushy about distributing these items to everyone at the meeting. Just have them available if anyone asks.
5. Check out craigslist.com. Use the craigslist for your city to find a writer’s group in your area. Or, place an ad on your city’s craigslist.com to start a group.
6. Take an online writing workshop or class. You’ll meet other writers there and probably form some ongoing friendships that will last long after the workshop has ended.
7. Find another professional online whom you would like to include in your network. Then, instead of asking this person for help, figure out a way you can help him, then email with your offer. For example, if you see authors who are offering workshops or online courses that don’t compete with your own, offer to post this information to your site for these authors.
These are only a few of the ways you can broaden your professional network. Now…come up with some additional ways yourself and it won’t be long before you have a wide professional network and a booming freelance writing business.
